The behaviour of scaled geotechnical models subjected to seismic loading.

The behaviour of scaled geotechnical models subjected to seismic loading.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the behaviour of scaled geotechnical models subjected to seismic loading. Several slope models were built and tested at the APS 400 Electro-Seis force generator, with a variety of specific characteristics and in particular (a) dry or semi-submerged, (b) with steep or minor slope inclination, (c) unreinforced or incorporating soil reinforcement, and (d) incorporating a pipe, aiming to simulate a scaled pipeline. The monitoring tools / methods utilized were (a) optical fibre sensors, aiming to strain recordings inside the slope models (b) the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique, in order to capture the failure mechanisms, and (c) accelerometer for the recording of the acceleration levels imposed.
